The lymphatic system is part of the overall circulatory system. The vascular system uses the heart to pump blood throughout the body in a continuous flow. In contrast, the lymphatic system flows only in one direction. It moves towards the neck region where it empties into the veins leading to the heart. The lymph acts as a drainage system. It cleanses the body of toxins and removes large particulate matter from the tissue spaces. It also supplies hormones, proteins, fats, and lymphocytes to all cells. Lymph produces antibodies within the body and makes a quarter of the white blood cells which fight infection. There are twice as many lymph vessels and lymph as there are blood vessels and blood in the body. Massaging the reflex for about 20 – 30 seconds, moving around the reflex with the fingers may be beneficial.
